For those who don’t smoke, a pack of cigarette usually costs about 2,500won. That’s cheaper than a Big Mac! The ministry has a plan to almost double the current price. It’s not clear whether they do it gradually or just at once. The current price has not been changed since 2004. Korea has one of the highest smoking rates among OECD countries. More than 44% of the male population smoke in Korea. The primary reason for the price hike is to reduce the country’s smoking rates and increase tax revenue.
