Korean Paper, Hanji
Hanji is traditional Korean paper, which is hand-made from processing mulberry plant bark. Before modern times, hanji was the only paper used in Korea. Hanji is termed as “living paper” because of its relation to nature. Unlike western paper, it is neutral and made only of natural materials. Hanji is thin but strong. The fibers ventilate so it lasts a long time. Hanji has many users. Mostly it was used for passing down records; Hanji also covered living areas and decorated homes. It symbolized cleanness and purity in religious ceremonies. Since the introduction of modern paper, there has been a drop in demand for hanji.
